He’d missed her again
just like every day the week before
The girl, on the bike
with the sweep of lemon hair caught in a low ponytail
messenger bag swung over one shoulder
The girl who had so unexpectedly
on a cloudy November day
eight days ago
rode up on the bike
and lifted a parcel
from the basket in back
and then stood waiting
watching through the stream of Tuesday commuters
past the south platform to the window

That’s just lovely. I remember a story of an old man who saw a girl in white on a boat and looked into her eyes, never even knowing her name but thinking about her every day of his life afterward. Great stuff.

I love this. Short and so very sweet. I remember L-O-N-G ago making eye contact with a man in grocery store and thinking ~ well, I won’t tell you but I think you know. This brought up that memory. Thank you (I think.)

Lovely story, Karen. You capture the experience of sudden attraction very neatly, and with pathos.

Ah lovely – that feeling of instant attraction, instant connection, can be so mesmerizing! And probably most of the time better than if you actually meet the person and get to know them. Few real people can live up to the romantic ideal this kind of waiting will inspire!

True! She can always be the perfect one if he never sees her again. Thanks for reading and thanks for your kind words.

Once you make a perfect first impression, it’s hard to go anywhere but downhill from there.

None stuck yet, or, at least, none told me. But thanks. I do okay.
